☮.♥.✮ ☀..✈: I Don't Like To Eat Fish, But I Try
15 September, 2009

I don't like fish. I do ♥ SEAFOOD: prawns, crabs, mussels, lobsters, squid, clams, oysters but NOT fish. Unfortunately, because of medical reasons related to the removal of my right Thyroid last year, I do not have that much of a choice, but to eat fish whenever I can for Iodine and for its miraculous benefits for the body.

I've had what my friends would consider to be superb salmon, excellently prepared blue marlin and tuna steaks, but I still cannot get myself to fully appreciate it. The fishies and fishie dishes that I can eat are: Steamed Fish With Garlic in Super Bowl + Tanguige Steak in Kainan sa Dalampasigan + Grilled Tilapia + Smoked Fish, popularly known as Tinapa + Gourmet Tuyo. I eat Dalampasigan's Tanguige Steak because it does not taste like fish at all. The rest aren't that offensive to my taste buds because they are always paired with SAWSAWAN or dipping sauce.Ü

Then there's GOURMET TUYO.Ü I must say that this has to be one of the best things that happened to a non-fishlover's world, at least for me. It is best eaten with rice that's just been cooked + salted egg. It's my rainy day food. I've learned to eat mine with wheat bread or Sky Flakes' Oat Fiber Crackers. Sounds unappetizing? I know the combination sounds a little odd, but it works and it's fabulous! My ultimate favorite and so far it's still unparalleled... it's the Gourmet Tuyo made by GUSTAZO.

One can choose between Mild and Hot. I just have this burning love for Gustazo's HOT Gourmet Tuyo. It's a major bummer though that I cannot have it all the time because It's not a regular item in supermarkets so I'm really lucky if it's bazaar season. I am most likely to find Gustazo people selling at bazaars otherwise, I have to go all the way to Rowena's in Tagaytay for my Bottled Gourmet Tuyo.

  • TUYO is sundried salted fish. It's a must-try when you visit the Philippines. The salting and drying processes preserve the fish.

Hi ate! I certainly want to try the gourmet tuyo. Where is Rowena's located in Tagaytay?

    R. said...

If you're Manila-bound, Rowena's is on the right side of the road before you hit Silang. It comes after the strip of roadside vendors. But I think you don't have to go all the way to Tagaytay.Ü I just have to buy my bottle there because it's more convenient instead of going to Manila.

Where do you live here? I think Gustazo is also sold at the following:
    1. Pioneer Centre Pasig
    2. Sevillas Greenhills
    3. Picky Mom's in Tiendesitas
    4. Sevillas Trinoma

I love fish! And I love seafood more! I can safely say that I can avoid pork and chicken (I don't really eat beef, even hamburgers) if only fish and seafood are cheaper/fresher.
Will have to try Guztazo. Ang layo nga ng outlets.

Do try it -- hindi sya nakakaumay. And if you want to buy it, there's always Rowena's Tagaytay, Rico.Ü They will most likely be around at the Bellevue Bazaar and in Cuenca Bazaars. You're from the South too right?

There will be a Cuenca Bazaar next month. There will be a bazaar at Bellevue in October as well. I was able to get the scheds from one of my friends, dates are here.Ü

I love tuyo! My mom makes gourmet tuyo as well, when she does we eat it all the time, with sinangag, with pandesal or with crackers! She even makes her version of puttanesca with it. I haven't tried Gustazo's though. ;)

have you tried sinigang sa miso?

my favorite dish is sinigang na bangus with miso...but i don't like fish soup in general, it's too bland but a must.

I love fish but I am really fond of the fishy taste. So what I usually do when preparing a fishy dish is to garnish it with tons of different spices. Onions, garlic and ginger help neutralised the fishy taste.

hayayyay totally envy mode. you see... i REALLY REALLY want to eat fish but due to allergies--I'm only limited to TUNA and take note: that is CANNED. When tuna comes fresh, I get allergies. I've been trying to desensitize myself to get used to it but my immunity system just looooves to fight... =\ recently, i tried eating fish hotdogs because I'm craving for hotdogs and I wanted something that is not of meat. good thing i saw some milkfish hotdogs and tried some. i ate it and i thought i was fine until suddenly, i felt my pharynx swelling up and i tried my best not to panic because my mom was already feeling that something was wrong and i was actually prepared... i had my Claritin beside me and took it right away. anytime, i can just have that passage blocked and my airway will definitely be affected. gahhh even the smoke of grilled fish that would come in contact with my skin can bring me to rashes. sux.

You got me there.. Puttanesca with Tuyo. I wanna try that.Ü I hope there's a resto somewhere here in the South that serves this kind of pasta.

    ...^^v....
I never had the chance to ask them, but I won't be surprised if it's for export. What I do know is that it's a good pasalubong to Filipinos abroad.Ü

Sorry dear, but I don't eat Sinigang if it has fish, di ko talaga kaya.Ö

    Can't eat fish without sawsawan.

True that... onions + a lot of garlic + ginger always do the trick. My mom sometimes uses vinegar and citric stuff to kill the fishy taste.

Oh my. You'd better have those anti-allergies with you all the time. Is it just fish that you're allergic too? No other seafood?

I don't like fish to. I am not a fish lover. I only like fish if its grilled and its a tuna belly. It really depends on how the fish was cooked. If its something like sinigang na bangus sa bayabas, my yaya used to serve me pork chop or chopsuey instead. Now I just eat fish in small quantities but I prefer fruits. =)

    Hi Russ,

Thank you for hopping to Ronikage.com. one of my favorite fish dish is sinigang na labahita sa bayabas. :D

I suggest you try Mr. Choi's steamed fish. I think they are better than Super Bowl's.

    Have a great week!

RUSS, waaah we don't have that in our Pinoy store here, not sure if it's already on export.

I remembered a friend who came to visit here ordering two bowls of rice at Room Service and was asked, "just rice"? Little did they know na may BAON pala syang "fish in oil" from Pinas.

I think super hot (in pepper) over a hot plain rice is the way to go, kaya lang mapapakain ka ng maraming rice. Kainis.

Your friend is sooo cute! Super funny! I can imagine myself doing that too. Sometimes, when I go on out-of-town trips, I bring a bottle with me because I always worry about not being able to eat breakfast especially if am gonna be with people who are going to be dead drunk the night before.

Maaaaaan! You have to try it with rice that's bagong saing then you eat it either in front of your computer or the TV. BLISS!

    JAK.
Small Fish.. Ah, reminds me of Tawilis from Tagaytay.Ü

    iRONNIE.
Where can I have Mr. Choi's Steamed Fish? I think I can eat that if you tell me it's better than Super Bowl's.Ü

    CLARE.
I highly reco it dear. There's a Mr. Moo before you get to Rowena's.. Manila-bound.

    BABY BOY.
Sometimes, even if it were grilled, it still gets too fishy for me. I don't eat Sinigang na Bangus.Ö I know, ang weird ko! Hehe.

I feel you Russ. I don't eat veggies either. It really depends on how the veggies and fish are cooked.

Fish should really be in your diet now. It's healthy. Good thing we have this gourmet spanish sardines and the likes. Konting tiis lang talaga. We need our iodine, you know.

    Traveliztera said...

just fish. =\ but because i got used to a fish-free life, i dislike the taste of any malansa na food... i can eat a lot of seafoods depending on how they're cooked. kung malansa, i don't like it. grilled seafoods are super fine with me but once you turn them into a soup--no way.

SOunds funky... Gourmet Tuyo..why, the name sounds exotic at once. I'll give it a try.

Oh hey, you've had a thyroidectomy already? So you're on daily thyroxine na? It's admirable how you're taking care of your health and being conscious about your diet. That's not easy at all. Keep up the good work!

Oh hey, try sashimi...you just might like it. i know i do. i blogged about it being better than sex once...figuratively, of course. :-)
