☮.♥.✮ ☀..✈: Day 155 » Don't Be Compliment-SHY
21 August, 2009

Despite being annoyed with Mom this morning, I still had a good day.
This afternoon, one Fitness Trainer at the gym said,

Russ… Ang payat mo na! Tuloy mo lang yan, malapit na.
And then the other day, I got two messages in Facebook from friends who told me that I looked great and that my weight loss has become an inspiration. They also asked me what I eat and what I do. I know I have not achieved my weight goal yet, but I thought those were wonderful words from them. I was grateful for the compliments I got because it meant that I was on track and that I was doing something right with my body. I sent both friends an SMS and said THANK YOU; I was very happy with what they said and that they motivate me to continue what I was doing.

Point #1
If someone tells you how lovely or fabulous you look, don’t be at a complete loss for words or be in autopilot mode and just blurt out, “Hindi kaya! I don’t look good, I look awful!” or something to that effect. I’m not exactly sure if it’s human nature to feel uncomfortable with compliments and nice words. We can be so busy being tough on ourselves, setting very high standards dictated by all sorts of media we see every day that we do not quite know what to do with positive feedback anymore.

I used to feel awkward when someone would praise me about something and I even wish that I’d hear something not good just to make a point that that’s what they’re really thinking. However this changed when I experienced giving a compliment and the person just shook it off just to prove her self-perception through me. So there were certain instances when I purposely cut down on the number of times that I would give a compliment to a person because I do not want to get into an exchange about why I am wrong :-(

Point #2
We should learn to embrace praises and affirmative words and at the same time, we must start to believe them. Happily accept a compliment. Give a warm smile and pleasantly say, “Thank You.” I think we should treat positive feedback given to us as a present and in that way, we would also know how to make the giver feel good by graciously accepting the gift.

Again, if you’re told that you’re sexy or you body is so buff, sincerely thank that person. After all, you worked hard for that body so you should be proud of yourself and what you have achieved. Isn’t it great when others notice your improvements? I personally feel so much better and I’m more than glad that people around me take in this change nicely.

i agree with you that somehow, it's a human nature to be uncomfortable with nice compliments. i, too, sometimes feel so embarrassed when a 'good work' of mine gets noticed or complimented.

anyway, i don't know which of the two ladies in the pic is you but whatever it is you are doing to get fit, well, it is indeed working.

ahahaha its so pinoy that when you get a compliment, we try to deflect it pero deep inside feel na feel naman natin.

thanks for dropping by my blog russ, but how do i follow you? hope you can drop by again.

Maybe it is human nature to react simply yet deep inside they really feel great that they got such a compliment. It is nice to know that you are loosing weight. I wish I can do the same. Or maybe I wish I just had a job para pumayat. =)

You got nice points there. I wish people will learn to be like this. Nice POV!

Congrats, Russ. I know how hard it is to get your target weight. A real pain, actually. Pain has its rewards though. :)

Ah right, that's better way to put it. More than human nature, it's a very Pinoy thing to do -- tama! Sure thing, will visit your blog again.Ü

EKS.
I'm the one on the right, without glasses.

BABY BOY.
Yes, it is human nature to react and like what Pinay in Dutchland said, it's very Pinoy to deflect compliments. Hey... You don't need to have a job to lose weight - if it would be any consolation, I think you should know that I am currently not working.Ü

wow! congrats russ for getting closer to your targets.

i agree with you that compliments should be treated like presents and should be accepted pleasantly... i also believe when people say that to reject an offer(or in this case a compliment) is a form of insult. i think you'll know when people are sincere in giving the compliment... so be nice in accepting it. ;-)

Thank you for returning the visit.Ü

GAB'S MOM.
I agree with you, it's easy to tell when a person is just pulling your leg. But I think most of the time, when people give out compliments, they sincerely mean it.

JASSY.
Mine's also seasonal, this isn't forever. I wouldn't really workout like crazy if it weren't for this almost uncontrollable thing that my thyroid is giving me. I really don't have a choice.Ö So might as well make the most out of it :D

that's a good way of looking at it, ate. :] nice. it IS annoying when you give compliments and people shake it off and make it look like i'm only saying that. :|

congrats russ! i guess the best answer to any form of praise is a sincere "thank you". :D nothing wrong with being modest but you gotta thank those who take notice! :D

WEDNESDAY.
You are absolutely right.Ü I was thinking that how we grew up might have influenced us to have that kind of attitude. In our culture for instance, we are always encouraged to be humble so if we agree to something positive about us, there are times that this is being judged as bragging. But really this shouldn't be the case.

KAITLIN.
Gracias!Ü Nice point ... we all should be able to take in nice messages about ourselves, to celebrate a success and to feel good about ourselves. We deserve to be happy.

hi russ :) uhmmm i don't know how to find u. =(

When I get compliments I just say a sincere "thank you" or "I know right?" Hahahaha But I usually say that without sounding like a complete arrogant. I don't really need to be humble if it's true. As they say if you have it, embrace it!

We're Facebook friends now.Ü My privacy setting are restricted, kind of not search-able because of spies & stalkers from my old job.

BABY BOY.
I'm glad you're inspired. Trust me, you can lose those unwanted pounds and have the abs that you like.

CHARLES.
"I don't really need to be humble if it's true." → Love this attitude!
