☮.♥.✮ ☀..✈: Day 01 » Struggling

What do you do if what your doctors tell you and the analysis given by your gym instructors contradict each other? I wonder who's saying the truth and who's BS-ing me.

THE BIG STEP
I have not gone back to see my doctors since I intentionally missed out on my check-up that was scheduled last month. However, I'm trying to be an easy and a wonderful patient now. I have been taking my meds religiously. I had my lab tests and ultrasound last Friday and I am scheduled to see my dear doctor Monday morning. I MUST see her because I got totally confused with the analysis that the people in Slimmer's World did. I wouldn't go into the details of it.

So last Friday, I went with my friend, Tarts, for the free trial workout. I also talked to a program consultant and we both agreed on a very good deal. Today, I am officially back at the gym. D was telling to try not to eat rice -- totally. I am struggling. You know our culture. I had half a cup for lunch, but I must've burned it already after today's work-out. I know that I can do it, in time! I just remembered... back in 2005, I wasn't eating rice at all.

NOW AND THEN: Hyperthyroidism & Hypothyroidism
Losing weight should be okay. I never had a problem with it, maybe because I used to have Hyperthyroidism. The good way to explain it is this: I could eat all I want and not gain a pound. Sounds fun right? Hell no! It may sound good, but you would not want to know the other features of Hyperthyroidism that manifested on me together with the complications, which until now, I find myself not ready to share with the whole world. Months after the diagnosis and after considering how worse things could be if this condition wasn't treated right away, I had a surgery last year to sort of fix things. My doctors say my condition's improved, however I am now clinically diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. It is the opposite of Hyperthyroidism. Though I was told by my doctors that this is easier to cure, I am having way too much difficulty with it. Really, I hate it! I have been eating healthy stuff in good proportions, but it's just too bad that my metabolism is uber slow now. The first month after my surgery, I gained 6 pounds and that is a lot! After that, I was given meds which I need to take indefinitely and since then I still am gaining weight about two pounds every month.

For now, I guess I have to take things one day at a time, and that means I need all the patience in the world. Amp! This is only the first day.

as in wala ka na thyroid? o may iniwan pa sila? kung wala na, you have to take meds kase hypothyroidism nga mangyayari and it's normal to gain weight. your first goal is to have your hormones be normal then saka ka na mag-exercise or diet ng todo para effective=)

I still have my left thyroid. The right's gone. It's frustrating most of the time.

Hello there, Russ. You know I had hyperthyroidism before, right? (you can read it all here: http://very-vlicious.blogspot.com/2007/02/inside-story-finally.html). It was the hardest thing I've ever experienced. Back then, I thought, goiter lang. Pero it almost killed me kasi nagka-thyroid storm na ako, exophthalmos (and until now, it's still obvious that I wish I didn't take my illness for granted) I had to be rushed at the ICU of Makati Med. I've undergone radioactive therapy (RAI) last July 2007. At first I wanted thryroidectormy na lang because I've heard of rumors that RAI can cause infertility pero since my endocrinologist said all I need is a small dose, I decided to go ahead with the RAI. Post-RAI, I got so weak, I had falling hair, I cannot even go up the stairs and I feel nauseaus most of the time. It's tough. It's a good thing I'm okay now. My endocrinologist, Dra. Wassmer is my hero. I'm also hypo now, but my doctor said it's okay since I'm on Euthyrox for life.

I'll find time to read your entry. My mom was totally against RAI. I did have hair loss even if I didn't do the radiation thing. I guess it was that bad already. It even got to a point wherein I couldn't walk long distances. I usually went with my mom to the supermarket, but I couldn't do even that one. I hope you'd share some more.

Is your med good? Did you gain a lot of weight? I want to tell my doctor to change the meds that she's giving me.Ö

The hardest part for me is after my confinement. Back then, I still have this big lump on my throat and it was so obvious. Good thing my officemates and friends were polite enough not to talk about it. Basta, deadma lang sila.

The hatest side-effect I have was the exosphthalmos - my eyes bulged out. My hyperthyroidism became Graves' disease na kasi. When I say my eyes bulged out, I mean it. I don't have eyelids anymore. I had to wear reading glasses to conceal it but still it was very obvious. When I sleep, my eyes are open. It freaked out my family who saw it. Then I became very photosensitive -- even on regular flourescent light, silaw na silaw na ako.

So I had my RAI. Two weeks after that, I got really angry kasi nga the symptoms worsen. I remember crying because I can't get on a jeepney. At 5'7, my weight dropped to 96 lbs. I had falling hair, I'm quesy all day and I was just so tired. A month after RAI, that's the time I started to feel better. The lump had disappeared.

Just last, last week I went back to my endocrinologist and saw my TSH exam, it's slightly above normal so she said I'm already hypo. She prescribed Euthyrox. I think it speeds up my metabolism. But she said, I'm very okay now. My vital signs are all good. I'm at my healthiest now. I'm set to be back by July. Basically, the meds I'm taking are only for maintenance. Sadly, my eyes is still not back to the way it was. Especially the right one. My opthalmologist said it could take years before it could go back. Sometimes, it won't come back anymore. That's the hardest thing to accept. I don't want to undergo surgery for it because it's very risky they had to break some of my facial bones just to get it back. That's why I'm very prone to huge blimp-like eyebags. I had to live with it because again, I thought it's "just goiter". I really regret that.
